String Recommendations for my new SR5

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got my new StingRay 5 today...

Any recommendations as to what to string with.. On my sterling I use DR High Beams.....I love them.. Im fairly new to the 5 string world. Are there any new things to consider when looking for strings??

Opinions/recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

I always use DR Low Riders, but that is a personal taste thing. The High Beams are great strings as well and the B is just as focused as the rest of the strings in that set. Lately, I've been trying the Black Beauties and so far they kill! I am a faithful DR user and in my opinion you can't go wrong with trying all of their sets to suit your own flavor.

I use Hi-Beams on my 5 string, and Fat Beams on my 6 string. Very good, at least try them. For being round cores, they have a very solid B.

Also, post some pictures!

I string my SR5's with D'Addarios, mostly because the B string (.130) works the best of any I've tried. MHO/IME, of course.

I'd use the stock strings until I found out what I thought of how they break in. Then go from there.

I dont like DR's, Elixers, or Daddario. Their sound just doesnt contribute to voice wanted. I use GHS & Rotosound alternately. Ernie Ball if its a bass or guitar that could use a little more crunch emphasis.

+1. If nothing else, this will allow you to hear "the Stingray Sound" the way it's intended by EBMM. From there you can decide if you like it or you want something different.

Congratulations on a superb instrument.
On mine, my favorite strings -- by far -- are GHS Boomers (45-65-85-105-130).

I used to love DR's...still do I guess. But after trying some D'Addarios last year that's all I've been using. I really like the bright sound of new strings and that's why I loved the DR's...they stayed that way for awhile. However, I've been extremely happy with the D'Addario's on my Modulus FB5 and that's what I'm going to stick with. I used to use the EB strings but they seemed to lose their brightness and go dead way to quick for me.

I use Sadowsky Blue Label Steel Rounds on my SR5 and they work fine.

My SR5 is fretless, and I love GHS Pressurwounds on it. I know some fretted players like them too.

I'm pretty much a DR guy on fretted 5's... I like the Lo-Riders because I prefer a stiffer string, but I use the nickel for a more old-school tone, which might be contrary to what you want out of your 'Ray.

Beautiful bass, btw. And don't let anyone tell you that's a one-trick pony! I haven't found a single style of music that I can't play on a Stingray!

I've been using EB regular Slinky's, but I'm going to try Dunlops (.045 to .130) as soon as they get here.

Try DR DDTs 45-125. A lot like hi-beams but with a much better B and a slightly mellower top end. With a ray, there is always enough top on tap.
