String Scale Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a long scale (34'') fretless fiver and I'm looking for some flat wounds. I want D'Addario Chromes but can only find them in Super Long scale.

Anyway, what do i do? Will the super longs fit my long scale and I'll just have to cut them more?

Thanks in advance guys

I imagine that long scale is what you need. What bass? If it strings through the body, Superlongs might work OK. I wouldn't cut into the "speaking length" of the string -- the part that has no silk. I have used extra long TI Flats on my Laklands and the G string is just a bit too long -- some of the speaking length wraps around the G post, but it hasn't hurt the string.

If you're stringing through the body (i.e. through the back of the body), you'll NEED super long scale D'Addario Chromes.

If stringing through the bridge, however, you want long scale but note the some of the silk may sit in the saddles. You may want to cut away some of the silk, but I leave mine as is and do not notice any negative impact on tone at all by doing so.
