Don't know any in standard sets. Lot's with standard G-E with taper B (MTD, Fodera, Smith, etc.).

Hmmm....that's a start....I got a new bass strung with SR2000s and I was blown away by the B string, and I didn't know if it was the bass or the strings. The higher strings didn't make much/any difference. then I restrung it with d'Ad XLs and the B was much more murky, like my other bass. So basically, I think I'm converted!

Of the ones you listed which are nickle?

Thanks for the help

The Fodera and Smith's come in Nickel. Also, Sadowsky Nickels (VERY nice) have a tapered B and a very tight B string feel.

Per my post in a similar thread, I'm not sure that the taper is the driving force behind the good B string sound... more likely the string design and brand. However, nothing wrong with a tapered B, if nothing else, to simplify getting it into the bridge when changing strings.

Thanks. I'm so concerned about the feel as much as a good clean tone. I'm also thinking the SR's were Stainless, which I'd not used before, and that could also have something to do with it....

Lakland Nickel & Stainless rounds have tapered E & B, but they are designed for through the body on a 35" scale. The strings are made by GHS, but GHS doesn't put out a stock set under their brand name with the tapers. If you have a 35" through the body, I highly recommend the nickels. And they're on;y about $30 a set with shipping direct from Lakland.

Fender 8250's and 8255's have taper'd E and B's. The 8255's are made for non-string-through basses, however they are hard to find. Great sounding nickel strings!

I've got 2 4-string sets of SS strings with black silk. They both have tapered E's, so I assume if you got the 5-string set the B would also be tapered. I always thought these sets were Labella HRS. Am I wrong?

I'm using the LaBella HRS on my Lakland 55-01. They indeed have black silk and a tapered E and B. They sound fantastic, too. No one around here carries them so I got them from Sam Ash online, I think. Something like $17 plus shipping.

I was going to recommend LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels myself. I love 'em! They're nicely priced, too.
