The D'Addario XL nickels seem to have more tension which to me is a good thing.

They're about the same to me, so I just buy whichever is cheapest at the time.

Not many options. I used to use D'addario XL's on every bass. But I recently tried DR High beams on my main one and I love them.

i myself don't care for any d'addario strings. i do like ernie ball guitar strings, but don't have any experience with their bass strings.

I like them both too. Slinkys tend to have a little more zing, top end, and a better E string.
XL's are mellower, feel smoother, darker sounding, and a bit more percussive.

I bought a set of Slikys and have them in the waiting for when my new Ibanez EDB555 arrives. Then I'll compare.

Ernie Balls are my favorite bass string, at least for roundwounds. I wish more places carried them around here...most stores I find have those GHS "Boomers", and that's about it, which I hate. I've tried those strings and can't stand them.

Also good even tone.
They work great on my jazz bass.

Another close poll. Two popular strings. They both must be good.

D'Addario EXL170's, all they way. If I need flatwounds, I just get something interesting that I haven't tried before. Usually I'm kind of out of options when it comes to flatwounds, since my local musicstore don't stock much bassstrings at all...
