Which string should I go with next?

I know that's a REALLY open question, so let me narrow it down a little bit.

Currently both of my four-strings are Jazzes and both have DR Sunbeams on them. But I just paid for a Lakland 55-02D and I'm REALLY looking forward to having it.

Now the catch: I've been told that most five-string sets don't always sound like the same four-string set only continued lower. This sounds like BS to me. But honestly I can't dispute it from personal experience. And I don't know if there is a difference with that little bit of extra scale length.

I love the medium-low tension of my sunbeams. I love the 'comfortable' tone they come with. Do the five-tring Sunbeams still sound that way, or as my smart alec friend threatens, will the B sound like a prosthetically added D'Addario? (not to diss D'Addario's, but you have to admit they sound different)

So, basically I'm looking for something where the top four strings will be as much as possible like my current Sunbeams, and the B will match the set in tone and possibly have just a bit more tension than is typical for a B.

If I'm dreaming, or if that doesn't work, someone please tell me.

Okay. Let the flames begin.

Bard2dbone, the great thing I've found about my 5502 is the B sounds great with just about every one of the top string makers i've tried. maybe it's the Lakland Mojo, I don't know. I've used DR lowriders, Sadowsky Long Scale, Lakland and SIT Rock Brites (my favorites) all stainless steels and the B sounds great, I have yet to try Sunbeams or Highbeams because of the lesser tension factor.
Good Luck

Yeah, what he said. I've never used sunbeams but I do know that Sadowsky hexcore SS sound awesome on my Lakland. The B is tight and rings clear as a bell.

I really love my Sunbeams. I just didn't recall ever hearing anyone say they used them on a 55-02 and I wondered why not.

I haven't tried the Sunbeams on my 55-02 yet only because my current set up is for a taper b and I don't feel like fooling with it.

I tried Sadowsky Nickels and liked them a lot. I also tried Ken Smith Rock Master Stainless and liked them a lot.

The other day I just put a new set of Lakland Stainless on and it is truly a match made in heaven for me. I like the piano-esque tone.

I will try others, but the Laklands are definitely accomplishing my tone goal.

I don't think it's BS, but the reason has nothing to do with the strings themselves. Neck/headstock mass and stiffness are different on 4 and 5 string basses. This alone will change the tone, and possibly feel too IMO. I know it is true for guitars, and I see no reason for basses to be different.

You may have to buy very different strings for your 5 that will cancel out the tone change. Unfortunately, I can't help you on that.
