String Silk Colors?

Sign in to disble this ad
Has there been a thread telling what color silk is on which manufactures strings, so that when we get a bass, we know what's on them? If not, let's start one.

For instance:

D'addario chrome flats = light blue
MTD = yellow
TI flats = red
LaBella tapewounds = yellow
D'addario XLs = no silk, ball ends color coded
TI Jazz Rounds = green
GHS Bass Boomers = red
Rotosound L66 Swingbass steels = blue silk

Anyone know what these are?

I recently picked up a Mike Lull P5 and it has roundwounds on with purple silks and a tapered B & E. Could these be Ken Smiths?

PS:
Thumper any Roscoe pics?

Great Idea for a Thread

Can you compile these as the list grows?

grooveguru; I can edit the initial posting as more information is added. I guess to be accurate, we would need to specify make, model, and/or string composition (nickel round, stainless, etc.).

PPS: I'll PM you photo's this evening.

TI Jazz Rounds (JR344) have a cool green silk.

So do the companies actually trademark the colored silks?

Is every red one a boomer?

I guess that's the point of this thread, you can at least narrow down what kind of string you have to one or 2 brands by silk color. Remember there are different shades of color, so we might have to get more descriptive, e.g., sky blue, dark green, etc. I know I'd love to replace the strings on my beloved Elrick with the same, but I don't know what they are.

I bought some Roto Swing 66 Steels and they had red silk. Dunno why, apparently they're supposed to be blue?

DR High-beams and Lo-Riders have no wrappings.

I know what you mean. I use D' Addario Slowwounds and they are all different colors...I know how to string a bass, I don't need a paint by number.

The set of factory Yamaha string that came on my bass had red silks. Every other set I've had since hasn't had any.

Every set of Roto Swingbass strings I ever bought had red silk - and I've been buying them for about 13-14 years.

Trace Elliot - lucky if you can get these now had Green Silk.

La Bella Hard Rockin Steel - Black silk

Elites Stadiums - Black Silk, alhtough these might have moved to Blue now....

Warwick Red Label - red

Dean MArkley Blue Steels - light blue (IIRC)
