string size differences...

Sign in to disble this ad
i have been using dr 45-100's and for some reason all i can find now is 40-100. the only change would be the d and g strings. would i have to do a neck adjustment and or have to do the intonation if i switch back and forth between 45, 65, and 40, 60?

How low do you like your action? My gut feel is that for a medium or high action you probably won't *need* to change anything. i.e. It will still be playable.

But the G string tends to be the highest tension string, so for a low action you may need to do a truss adjustment.

i usually find 40-100 sets to have the best string to string balance and feel. in a 45-100 set the D is often too high tension.

i usually have a medium action on my bass. string heights are factory measuremets and the neck has a slight bow because generally i dig in.

i was only getting 45-100 because that was the one always available at the local shops. now neither of them have those, and now its just 40-100. my main concern was always the 100 and the 80, but since those are the same it doesnt really matter. i just dont want to switch and then have to do a set up before my next gig.

I always assume that if I am changing strings to another brand/type/size that I will need to do a setup. So I wouldn't switch just before a gig. I realize you are sorta in a bind since they stop stocking what you want.

But I usually buy my strings online so I have to plan in advance. I also play flats, so I change strings..... when I feel like trying something different. The strings on my main gigging basses are over 3 years old now.

It shouldn't make too much difference. It's not an extreme change, you may have to raise the d and g strings and adjust the intonation. I doubt you'll need to do a neck adjustment.
