String Spreadsheet

Anyone else OCD enough to keep a spreadsheet of data for their basses and strings? I am.

At one point, I had about 7 or 8 instruments and had a hard time remembering what type of strings each had, when they were last changed, etc. So I set up a basic little spreadsheet in Numbers (Mac OSX) to keep track of everything. Some of the info I record: buy & sell date for each bass, year, make, model, scale, string type & gauge, date of last string change, where I bought the strings, and any other misc. notes. (Oooh, I just thought of another 2 columns to add - purchase price and selling price of each bass)

My spreadsheet goes back about 12 years. Interesting to review the basses I had bought and let go.

Anyhoo, not sure what the point of all this is. Just curious how everyone keeps track of strings for various basses in their stable.

I use my brain, because there are only 3 basses to remember. :P

I have 5 basses - 4 Fenders, 1 cheap Maestro fretless. I have rounds on my P Elite II (drop D) and Dimension. I change them whenever they go dead. Not broken in, but dead. I have nylons on my P Special Deluxe and my cheap fretless. I have Chromes on my HM. So realistically, I only have 2 basses to keep up with. But, I think the spreadsheet is a good idea.

I originally had 7 or 8 basses of various styles and various string gauges, scales, etc. Now, I'm down to only 4 basses - a Sadowsky Metro RV5, a Fender Highway One P, a Fender MIM Standard Jazz and a KSD fretless (vintage J-style). The Sadowsky usually wears Sadowsky Blue Nickel rounds, and the Jazz will have LaBella flats (Deep Talkin' Bass) for the 60s & 70s motown/funk tunes. The Precision just underwent a bit of a makeover, going from a higher-action, thumpy old-school approach (w/ heavy flatwounds), to a more straight-ahead rock/blues assignment with lowered action and medium-gauge SIT Power Steel Stainless strings - a nice match to the slightly aggressive tone of the Nordstrand NP4 pickups I installed. The fretless sees very little action and has some type of flats, which I forgot to make note of.

So, some variation in string types (and basses) to cover a wide spectrum of tunes for the 4 bands I play in.

When I had a collection of guitars and basses, I just kept the string package in the case with the instrument so I knew what exactly was on it.. lol

I have a spreadsheet on every bass, amp, pedal, and guitar ever purchased (majoring in accounting). The worst part is when I scroll to the bottom and view the column totals for how much I've spent, how much I've earned back by selling/returning, and my net loss (no profit for hobbyist).

If I added string and accessory costs to the list (which I purposely kept off to make me feel better... slightly) then I would be completely kicking myself every single day of my bass playing life. And that's why my spreadsheet is buried deep under multiple folders, renamed as some random system file syntax error, and hidden with folder options selected to hide hidden files. None of my family or friends know of this file nor have they seen the numbers (costs). It's proof that GAS is costly and evil, sprinkled mildly with regret at every corner.

Each of my basses has always worn a different set of strings...

The other day I was going through my closet and found a bass I didn't even remember getting!

I've thought about it, but never actually done it. Usually though, it me calling the Artist Rep and saying, "What gauges did I get last time?"
