String suggestion for pop/rock, pickstyle

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, im on the biggest string search of my life. I want to find that perfect string that i can stick with for a while but dont have hundreds of dollars to go try every string out there. I play pop/rock music with a '74 Gibson Ripper, pickstyle. You can check out the style of music here: www.myspace.com/holidayparade

I have already tried a few types. I used to use D'Addarios a while ago on my old crappy bass and never really cared to actually listen to the tone of the string and see if i liked it or not, i wasnt really into bass that much back then. I tried to put D'Addarios on my Gibson only to find that they are not long enough and taper off too soon at the nut, so the only way to got that route is to buy the "super long" scale which are not in stores(or at least not that i have seen). The string that it came with(got it off ebay) were pretty good strings but i have no idea what they are. I recently put roto swingbass steels on and did not like them at all. They were way to "clangy" and harsh for my taste and didnt seem to have a whole lot of punch to them, so i think im sticking with nickels. I have heard a lot about DR sunbeams and they seem like they might be a good match, i think that will be my next experiment.

..any other suggestions for my equipment/style?

DR lo-riders might work well for you - make sure they're the purple pack (nickel). If memory serves correctly the ss lo-riders are in a grey pack.

I have heard good things about the lo-riders as well as the sunbeams(assuming both are nickel). Whats the difference between the two? anything noticable? Also, will they be long enough for the string thru body style?

I haven't tried Sunbeams yet to compare them. They are nickel strings, the small paragraph on the manufacturer website leaves me guessing how they would compare.

Okay then let me ask you this, what is the difference between round-core and hex-core? ..seems to be one of the main differences in the two..

Round core is lower tension (like TI Jazz Flats and DR Hi/Sunbeams), while hex core is standard tension (pretty much every other string).

Tonally, it's kinda tough to tell. In a comparison between SS Lo-Riders and Hi-Beams in the same guage, I found the Hi-Beams to be a bit brighter and more percussive, but that might be a factor completely separate from the core.
