String suggestions for my style?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking into new strings. I want round wounds, probably stainless steel, and most specifically, HIGH TENSION. In fact, anything high tension and round wound. I'm going for a burpy, midrangey, punchy, I guess Jaco-ish tone.

I'm kind of liking the GHS Boomers and Super Steels, but am wondering if there is anything above it. I've played DR Hi Beams and Fat Beams, and the Hi Beams were too low tension.

Any suggestions? I don't really want to use Rotosounds, because they don't last that long, but I'd try them. I've heard the LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels are good, any opinions?

In short, high tension, trebley and midrangey strings. I'd like them to come in 4, 5, and 6 string sets.

I'm thinking of trying some stainless steel Sadowsky Black Labels. They are at a good price, and I've heard good things about them. However, when they say good for slapping, do they mean mid scooped?

Edit: I realized I probably should've used the search function.

Ok, I ordered a set of Blue and Black label Sadowsky strings. Let's see how they do.

I'll probably be doing a comparison between the Blue and Black label strings. Any suggestions for things to do?

DR Lo-Riders are pretty high tension - especially if you get them in medium-gauge or heavy-gauge. Have you not tried them yet?

As for tone, most any quality string such as you describe could get you there - with application of a little EQ and the appropriate playing technique.

Good luck,

MM

Yeah, I can get the sound. For some reason, I always felt kind of wary of Lo-Riders. I'll have to get a set.
