String Tension for Light Gauge Flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've done a bit of digging (25 minutes should be "a bit", right?) and the closest thread I discovered discussed the different tension between the medium & medium-light gauges of La Bella, TI, D'Addario, Fender, and DR.

So, my basic question is, in the terms of light gauge string sets only, how would the order go from highest tension to lowest tension on the mentioned string manufacturers - or if certain companies like La Bella even produce light gauge flats.

I'm particularly interested in the tension between D'Addario Chromes and Fender Steel Flatwounds (both light gauge) and which has the lowest tension based on either the numbers and/or personal experience from TB members.

Thanks in advance, too.

Another question is just based on your personal experience with light gauge flats. Which manufacturer did you try and how did they compare to other [light gauge] flats?

La Bella does make a very fine light gauge set--the 760FX set. They are quite close to TI flats in feel and stiffness. La Bella has the most gauges of any string company I know of.

The light Chromes and the light Fenders will be very, very similar. I have played them both, and could probably not tell you which was which sid by side.

IME, D'addario's ECB80 super soft flats have ALOT lower tension than the new fender 9050L flats. the ECB80's have a tension very similar to TI flats. i read some great reviews of the fenders here on talkbass, but i tried a new set of last week on one of my basses that i run TI's or ECB80's on, and didn't care for the fender's feel (stiff) or tone (way brighter) at all, so i took them off after 5 minutes and restrung it with new Daddario ECB80 chromes. too bad for me, since the fenders are very inexpensive. YMMV.

I just put on a set of the new Fender 9050 "CL" (Custom Light). Someone posted they are the same as D'addario Chromes. Don't know if that's true or not. Anyway, they are lighter tension than other strings I have tried.
