Question String Through?

Sign in to disble this ad
What are the differences between strings that go through the body and strings that don't? Is one more convenient than the other? different sounds?

Really no difference convenience wise unless you are really anal. Through gives great string break angle and virtually guarantees you won't suffer from saddle rattle. Especially if saddles are low and intonated far forward which all my basses are. My vintage Fender style bridges G string break is a little less than I like but it functions fine. Extra sustain is debatable with through body.

solid post 96tbird...

it is very debatable weather or not there is a difference...

There are some strings that are not as flexible and are not recommended for through body instruments especially if the angles the strings need to pass through are too sharp.

Aha, I failed to consider the strings themselves and focused on the method. As Slapinfunk (resident purveyor of strings) says, flats especially may present problems with through body. Heavier gauges of rounds may too; I would think roundcores might. Slapinfunk?

I have not heard that about specifically round cores. I suppose it will cause a problem if they are not cut correctly at the tuning posts. The extra bend by the bridge could push the windings off or something like that...

The main strings I have seen that are not "recommended" for string through use are flats that are tightly wound and some round wound / other wound brands...

HOWEVER, those same company's state that their strings can be used on through body instruments if the angle of the strings will not be too dramatic.

I wish I knew the specific angle specifications...

Also any Taper Core strings may not fit correctly on through body instruments... The taper portion may end up laying on top of the saddle which doesnt mean the string will not perform properly, you just wont get the benefits from the taper string (which are also generally more expensive).

There are some companies that make a taper string for through body instruments for G&L OEM spec for example...
