String Through Body/Bridge Questions. Need HELP!

Sign in to disble this ad
The concept is new to me. I can see the difference physically...ball is at the end of the bridge or the ball is at the back of the body with the string running through the body and makes a curve to go over the bridge etc.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to the two different methods?

The ax I just recieved ad a gift () is ready for either. It came from the factory with the strings running through the body which is what I'll probably do when I change them, but would like to understand the differences a bit better. Thanks!

Did you do a search first? I mean, there's a topic right on the same page....

Anyway, the shorty of it is one sounds deeper and punchier, while the other sounds more sparkly and trebly.

Having strung up several basses both ways with the same strings (two Lakland US 494s, a Hammer Cruise bass with the Gotoh bridge, a Lakland Skyline 55-01) I can tell you this. There ain't no real difference in sound, and only a very subtle difference in how they feel under my right (plucking) hand.

It's one of those "don't worry about it" things.

you know this from direct blind A/B testing experience??

I can say from ALL of my testing using the same bass, strings, player, and midi accompaniment tracks that there is no discernable difference outside of pseudoacoustics.

I have done the recorded A/B testing with several of my custom built basses - and nobody has been able to accurately and continuously determine which stringing method was used when listening to recorded playbacks. this is true for P-bass, J-bass, and SCPB type pickups (Nordstrand and Barts) ... is true for the bass track in context and heard solo ... is true regardless of the body wood, music style, playing style, fretted or fretless, 34" or 35" scale

while you may want to hear a difference because you've been conditioned to expect a sonic difference, there is no difference in sound on a properly constructed instrument

the caveat to this is that a taper core string will sound different due to its core resting on the bridge saddle when top loaded and its wrap resting on the bridge saddle when thru-body loaded ... but since all things aren't truly equal in this specific scenario, it isn't an apples/apples comparison is it? it is also what Mike Watt experienced (and incorrectly attributed) when using the spacers on his top loader - he also used taper core strings, and the spacer put the string wrap onto the saddle instead of the string core

all the best,

R
