String through body vs. scale length

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard numerous times that stringing through body basses provide better string tension.

Looking at the formula for string tension, string tension is proportional to scale length.

Scale length is measured from to bridge saddle to nut.

Is string through body going to increase the tension by increasing the scale? Or it is just another factor that is not captured in the formula? .... Or is this just a myth?

Myth. However, there is an ongoing discussion as to whether overall sustain improves with thru-body stringing vs. thru-bridge. I've also seen concerns regarding the "break" angle of taper core strings in the thru-body configuration.

Scale length does affect string tension and the strength of the "fundamental" note. Stringing through the body will have a similar affect. Stringing through the body does NOT increase scale length but does have a similar affect. If you have a bass that does both through body and "top body" ( Lakaland ) try both and see if you feel/hear the difference. It should be fairly obvious. It was to me!

Brilliant idea!!

Just tried with the E string on my JO4 Lakland and yes, there is a difference, definetely better tension is achieved with the through body stringing!

Any Lakland owner can easily confirm this.

I've never noticed a difference in tension between bridge and body stringing. Tone change is a definite yes, though.
