String type and plucking technique

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all - relative newcomer (but a daily lurker) on TB.

I just got a Gretsch Electromatic Junior Jet bass. To experiment, I replaced the stock rounds with LaBella short scale flats.

The tone is great, but I have an occasional problem with my plucking technique, which I experienced with other basses strung with flats. It's like my two plucking fingers can't really get a good hold on the strings before I pluck them, and it hinders my playing by slowing me down, particularly when I'm attempting a quick run.

I guess my question is: could I be plucking too hard? Should I go back to rounds, which I find much easier to pluck (they just feel a little more slippery, which I like), or keep working on a softer plucking technique?
