What purpose does the colored string winding play? Can I cut it off the bridge end without affecting anything?

It looks nice on the headstock. It won't do anything if you remove it... on some of my older strings they start to come off after a while because I switch strings on different basses often.

Yup, there just there to look pretty.

It might be some vestige of string-making for older instruments that had tuning pegs would could be marred by the metal strings (such as violins, cellos, and the like), so the ends were covered in silk to prevent damage. My speculation, anyway.

Great to know. I dont like the colored ends on them! The Chromes blue ends dont look good on a sunburst IMO. Im gonna take a razorblade to them right now!
