Stringing a bass that has guitar-like tuning pegs

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a fan of "deadwounds" -- i.e., leaving strings on for months and months until they're thuddy instead of sparkly. As a result, I don't change strings often. Tonight, however, I'd like to change the strings on my Kramer Duke. It's been strung with D'Addario Piccolo strings for... jeez... probably 2 years? and now I want to string it back up with some D'Addario Half Rounds. The tuning pegs on the Duke are the kind you'd find on a guitar -- not the Fender style that I have more experience with. Well, I'm sick of winging it and I'd like to ask you guys what's the best way to string these things?

Thanks

Like a guitar

String it as a guitar gets strung........

Put the string through the post, about two or three inches from the post hole cut the string. (2" or 3" is your choice, but I go 3")

Pull the string back until about 1/2 to 3/4" is sticking out. Length depends on how thin the post is. You'll have to go with you eye, but likely 1/2 will do.

Now with the string through the post bend that part (the 1/2 to 3/4) of the string upwards.

Begin to turn the post until the string goes over the bend, and keep turning until it then goes under the bend so you now have two wraps with the bend in the middle of the two.

Now just keep turning and let the string keep wrapping under the bottom wrap until you're done.

Tune to pitch. You can snip off the extra part of the bend if you like.

I use this method on my Hofner which has small guitar type tuners. Actually they might be banjo tuners from what I know.

Works like a charm every time.

You can also go on a guitar string site and probably find "proper tuning." Try www.daddario.com - they probably show the correct method for stringing a guitar. Same method for bass with the small guitar type tuners.
