Question Stringing Trouble

Sign in to disble this ad
Last night my boyfriend and I were restringing his bass for the first time. We got all the strings on fine, but when we tested the sound and stuff, the A string makes the worst metal-on-metal vibrating sound where it makes contact with the nut x.x We made sure that each successive wrap around the knob was under the last to get the string as close to the nut as possible, but alas, the buzzing is still there and just a slight amount of pressure on the string behind the nut eliminates the sound. My boyfriend then messed with the bridge a little, but that didn't work either.

So pretty much, does anyone here have an idea what the problem might be?

Always, when you buy a new bass, buy a set of strings and have it set up by a guitar tech, you shouldn't have any problems restringing after that.

Thanks It's not a new bass though. His uncle gave it to him seven years ago. I just want to know what the problem is and how I can fix it.

Sounds like the truss rod needs to be adjusted slightly. or the nut might be damaged and the a string is sitting so low that its vibrating on the frets.

Or the new strings are a smaller diameter (gauge), allowing them to sit lower in the nut...
