Strings for a 10-string bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
Not the big single strings 10 string, but the double course like an 8-string. I can't find anywhere that has any for this bass. I even tried emailing Dean, but haven't gotten anything back from them.

It's the octave strings that I'm having a problem with. I need guitar strings, but made long enough for a bass.

Oh, I need a picture of this Bass. I've been drooling over JPJ's 10 string for ages now.

I would go through juststrings.com, order a standard 5-string set, and custom order the octave strings or perhaps find a piccolo set that would fit. Buying in bulking would also be cheaper in the long run as opposed to doing one set at a time.

D'addario has also been advertising a new custom ordering system in BP - that might be a good solution as well. There's also listings of 12-string manufactures at 12 String Bass.com as well as 12 String Bass.net - you could always go in that direction and ditch the 3rd octave.

Your wish is my Google search:

Even though the bass is still listed on Dean's site, I haven't seen it in stock for at least a year so eBay or a private sale might be your best bet. I always heard good things about the bass especially considering the price, but never wanted to spend that on a "one-trick-pony"... even is the trick is pretty cool sounding. I use effects for a "virtual" 10-string instead.

Heh, maybe this should have gone in the Bass forum, but hopefully someone will know about the strings.

This is not a bass I would use on every song. I currently use it for 3 songs in my band, and they are songs we tie together, so I don't need to change basses in the middle of it. I need to get it set up a little better, because my left hand gets pretty tired/sore towards the end of the last song.

Ok, I don't know a thing about piccolo bass strings. Are they pretty much just long scale guitar strings? I looked a little, and there are some pretty low gaugees listed for em. That might work if I can find one for the low B-string.

Nice, Modern yet simple. I'd like to have one, but like you guys said, very limited in use.
I guess I could do like JPJ and just write for it, do a reverse and the guitar could pick up the rythum.
The Manson's start at 10,000 or more. A little high for little use.

A Piccalo bass is a 34"-scale bass tuned an octave up for solo and chordal work, so they'd best be called a "specialized bass set". Now that I think of it, a piccalo set might be all wound and the octave strings you need plain on the D and G, so it may not work. The stock strings for the Edge Hammer 10 are...

G .045 / .014
D .065 / .017
A .085 / .026 (w)
E .105 / .036 (w)
B .128 / .047 (w)

...so I'd still say to use your favorite brand of strings and find singles through Juststrings.com - they've been extremely helpful when I've dealt with them. I'd also recommend using Steels, or at least on the ovtave stings for the classic "chime" that Octave Basses are known for.

The ones I have on there now are all wound except for the G-string. As far as I know it's what came on it from the factory, but I'm not sure, I bought it from a guy in CA used. Thanks for the help. I spent a lot of last night loo**** as juststrings, and I'm actually in contact with D'Addario to see what they can do.

Thanks again!
