Strings for 4 string drop tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
I play a 4 string in drop B and a five string in B standard.

I've always just used a 5 string set and thrown out the E or G string. But this usually leaves the three top strings too tight or too loose. I've recently moved to buying an extra light 4 string set and single B strings, this also tends to be a little cheaper.

Are there any other solutions out there?

For your 4 string drop B set, you could build a set from singles, and use the daddario tension chart pdf to choose gauges that have equal tension on each string.

Circle K Strings sell sets for drop tunings that are designed to have equal tension on each string. For example this set:

4 String Set - Drop Tune Standard 136
.136 .092 .068 .049

There is a big choice of gauges on this page: standard-drop-tuned-4-strings

They are excellent strings, there are reviews in the Circle K Strings thread.

Thanks, that's about what I was looking for. With all the people playing drop tuning it makes sense that someone would sell sets.

DR DDT's are specifically made for drop tuning.

DR DDTs are designed for detuned all-fourths tunings. Drop B tuning is different, the lowest interval is a fifth: B F# B E. When BlindtheCarrier says drop B I'm fairly sure he means B F# B E

That is correct.
