Question Strings, 40 Years Ago

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, so recently, I bought an old Kent project bass from the 60s. Originally, I wasn't really concerned about keeping it original. I was looking for shiny new chrome hardware and wanted to put modern pickups under the stock covers, etc., but as I work on the restoration more and more, I notice that I've gradually shifted. Now I find myself looking for replacement parts, a case, and even straps from the same era. But what about strings? What brand/model of strings would have probably been used on a bass back in the 50s and 60s?

um... labella jamerson's are the only ones that come to mind. according to labella, they are identical to the ones he used a long time ago.

Maybe Pyramid flats?

I read something about Pyramid Flats earlier today - that's what made me think about the original electric bass string. They're awfully expensive, though. I'm thinking about LaBella 760FXS right now.

I have a '63 P with flats that date at least from 1972 on it, but they're really no different than strings today. I agree with those above that Labella flats would be as correct as anything. The bonus is that their Deep Talkin' flats are my favorite strings.
