Try the standard nickel round wounds 45 - 105. They start out bright, but will warm up over a few days of playing them. Any brand is fine. D'Addario are probably the most common, GHS Boomers and Dunlop are good too.

Try fender flatwounds. I get real smooth tone out of my Schecter with them, and they'll never go bad. You could even use a bow on them if you want some unique sounds:P :bassist

I take it that by smooth you mean strong in fundamental with little growl. For this I would suggest a heavier string gauge, tape wounds or ground wound strings, and possibly stainless round wounds. I think nickel would have too many overtones for the sound you are wanting. Also, try playing panned to the neck pickup and plucking closer to the neck with a lighter touch.
