Strings for ABG

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a new ABG in October, but it came with such a horrid factory set-up that it buzzes EVERYWHERE! Also, the rounds it came with were incredibly bright. Way too much finger noise. So I'm going to get it set up at my local Best Buy, and am sure I'm getting new strings put on. But my problem is, I'm not sure what strings to get.

I was looking at Rotosound's Black Nylons for 5-string, but I also really like the price Carvin has for Labella Deep Talkin' Flats, which I have heard a lot about, and even with shipping they're much less expensive than the Rotosounds. I'm into the big Flatwound thing, my other 2 basses have Chromes on them. I'm looking for a tone that's closer to an upright than a standard electric. But I really don't know anything about strings to be honest. So can anybody help me?

I've never had any experience with the LaBella flats.... But, from what I've read, I'd be a bit concerned about the amount of tension those LaBellas would pull, especially it being a ABG. The only strings I've ever tried other than D'Addario bronze rounds are the Fender Nylons, which presented me with a happy medium between bright and smooth and thumpy. Not sure if the Fender nylons were changed when they rolled out the new line of strings, but I'd have to give them the thumbs up for ABG in my opinion.

I have the Roto Black Nylons on my Washburn ABG and really like the smooth sound and feel on that bass, and in general I don't like flats. They are expensive but last a long time I've had this set for over 3 years and they still have lots of life left.

Don't worry about the tension with tapewounds. I have Rotosound 88s on my Breedlove and I was able to loosen the trussrod after having Fender 9050 flats on it. Tapes have less tension than people think. They are just roundwounds with a nylon covering.

I'll put flats on my slabs - and have for a great sound, but I actually prefer the zing and noise of the round-wound bronzes on my AEB.

That's the reason why I bought it - to be different, so why would I create just another bass with thumpy tones when I have enough of them already.

I need that brightness and string sound to accomplish what i need in the AEB in the first place and I feel changing to a different string - besides the possible break-over problem and the added or lessened tension on the neck is a big negative to me.

Bronze-rounds are what I prefer on my acoustic bass.

I am not a phospher bronze string fan, so I went with tapes (GHS makes a kickin 5 string set), GHS Precision Flats, or TI Jazz flats on mine thru the years.

I have a set of status tapewounds which sound and feel great with the tension of a normal set. Last time I checked they came in a five string set as well.

They don't make any 34" 5-string sets.

EDIT: False alarm, I had to read their string guide.
