Strings for American standard Precision?

Sign in to disble this ad
What strings are you using on your american standard precision?
I like the fenders that came on it so far but when i tried to put on some fat beams I had lying around the E string doesnt sit in the groove properly. Are there any strings that will? or do I have to stick with the fenders?

I just took a set of GHS Precision Flats off a Jazz Bass to replace then with Pressure Wounds but I'm thinking those flats would be great on a PBass.

When you say "groove" do you mean on the saddle or the nut?

Oh sorry I didn't make that clear. I am talking about the 4 grooves in the saddle on the new high mass bridges. Has anyone else had this problem? The fat beans were 45-105. Perhaps a 100 e string would fit but I don't really want to go that light.

I believe a new Fender American P comes with the taper-wound E-string. So I believe you might want fender 8250's.
But on the other hand, I believe P's sound best with flats. If it is a P-J then get some rounds.

I .105 should be fine. Yes Fender's typically come with a taper wound set but their bridges will work for a non tapered string. I've used .105 E's on all of my Fenders with the bridge you're referring to. It needs to be set up for a tapered or a nontapered.

If you wanna go with a tapered E I'd go with:

SIT Taperwounds:

Great string at a great price! The picture is not the right one for what you're getting. They are a .45-.105 set.

Do you mean the saddle height will need be adjusted because the tapered string will sit lower to the frets than a nontapered, or ?

I guess what I am asking is not coming across clear enough. I tried putting some DR MM Fat Beams on and the E string didn't sit down inside the groove on the saddle. It kinda sat up on top the edges. Is this the case for everyone that is not using tapered strings or are there some strings that fit?

I'm using LaBella 760FM and have no trouble. The E is 0.109 I think. And certainly some are using the Jamerson strings, and the E is even thicker. So you shouldn't be having any problems with 0.104.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly but I have an american standard jazz with the same bridge and have used .105 and larger strings on it. A non-taper wound string won't necessarily sit in the bridge saddle so that it touches the very bottom of the groove and it doesn't have to. The groove is there to keep the string in place. As long as the string isn't moving when you play you should be fine. Look at vintage fender bridge saddles. They don't have a big groove that the string sits completely in and if you as me they work just fine.

Ok I just wondered if it would give a better sound with better sustain and clarity if it sat in there properly?

That is exactly what I mean. You will have to adjust your saddle height/break angle when switching from Tapered to Non tapered.

I get what you are saying loud and clear man! The string is not going to sit between two of the rows on the bridge if it's not tapered. But it should make enough contact that it should not matter. The only string that I ran on my Fenders with a taper was the B string. I never had a problem with the E on my 4's or my 5's.

See how the A is slightly bigger and doesn't fit right between the two spacers on the bridge? The E should be fine as well unless you hear a difference with the tapered or you want a tapered string.

There are plenty of tapered strings out there though if you want that.

My E string doesn't sit in the groove either. The string just needs to grip it some to keep from sliding along the saddle but once the break angle is set and it's tuned to pitch it's not going anywhere.

Ok thanks guys. I was just a bit concerned that it was going to extremely limit my string options. It seems not!
