Which Strings for Which Bass? (An opinion poll)

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought two sets of Prosteels, 45-105 and 55-110, and am unsure which bass to put them on.

I was planning on putting them on my Thumb NT and my Corvette Standard. One would be tuned to DGCF, maybe CGCF, and the other EADG.

I can't decide, so I'm asking you folks!

Put the heavier gauge on the detuned bass.

That's what I was intending to do.

The point of the poll is to find out what bass I should detune.

Detune the bass that sounds best detuned. Which of the two has slightly better lower bass content sound wise? Use that one for detune.

Great. I misunderstood. My gut feeling is that the NT bass will sound better detuned. However, try them both and see which does what better, as the previous poster recommended.

Yeah, I have detuned the NT in the past -- DGCF and BEAD -- at it sounded great, the active circuitry must help.

The Corvette as a more even, growly tone, great for rock. The NT is brighter with a bit of a scoop, great for metal.

I think I may just detune the Thumb.

I have a Corvette Standard FL, and I agree that the Corvette will probably be better off at standard pitch. You'll lose some of that lovely growl when you drop it down. I've noticed this a bit even when just drop D-ing with it; the string loses life.
