okay so next week I'm hitting GC for new strings and I wanna know what my options are with a 25$ budget.
it comes down to:
blue steels - wich i heard last 4 ever but break.
DR DDT heavey - which would be good since my band likes to play in drop D.
D'adderio - had them before and I liked them but I also want to see what else is out there.
I normally play fingerstyle unless I'm sitting down then I use a pick for comfort. my bass has a string through body if that makes any difference with a 34" scale, and I like a meaty jazzy tone.
other recomendations are greatly appreciated.

Out of the 3 you listed, D'addario has the shortest life. DR lasts the longest.
The heavy DDT will be really really tight in drop D or E standard tuning... I thought they were tight in D standard, and I like high tension. Medium should be fine for drop D. They cost a few bucks more than the others, but you won't need to buy new strings as often.

The sound muffled out of the package. I would rather use Carvin strings wich are cheap and made by La Bella

| | | | Of those Id pick the Dean Markley blue steels. I dont like the sound of daddario or DR. Never heard of anyone haveing a breaking problem with blue steels. Ive used them some in the past. Good string but rather bright sounding untill broken in.

I've tried D'addario XL's and ProSteels, Rotosound, Ernie Ball, DR Hi-Beams (stainless steel), DR Lo-Riders (stainless steel AND nickel plated). Rotosounds LITERALLY last for 2 or 3 days. If I were you, I'd go with the DR, definitely. Worth every penny. They lost longer than any string I've played. Take nickel Lo-Riders for example (I currently use nickel Lo-Riders, and those are the strings I'm using from now on). My first pair of nickel Lo-Riders lasted 5 months until I wanted to change them, and I just put on my second pair ever today. Stainless steel Lo-Riders would last about 2 months for me when I used to use them. Hi-Beams 1-3 months. I've never gotten as quality of a tone/sound as I have from DR strings. Amazing for finger OR pick playing.
If you want a quality string that will last long, sound good (for finger OR pick), a string you won't regret...then go with DR my friend. Get the nickel-plated Lo-Riders. I swear by them. |
