Just picked up a Jack Casady, which will be here anytime. I will need to re-string it and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what sounds good on these basses.
I play classic rock, and blues based rock, and want a round wound
Thanks for the help |

But you mentioned you want a round wound string. I recorded once with Rotosound 105's and it was pretty much the best recording experience of my life. Ofcourse the Avalon pre, vintage B15, and the huge wall mounted monitors at Sound Factory were part of the equation. You've got a great bass. Enjoy.

I put TI flats on it the very first day. This bass has been number one since. I've had more complements on my sound than I ever have before.
Anyway, I know Jack himself likes Blue Steels, and they seem to sound good on his recordings. Go check out http://jackcasady.com .There is a bass solo on the homepage. |

I recently bought a JC from another TBer, and while waiting for it to arrive spent a lot of time and energy obsessing over the decision about what strings to put on it. First I thought flats would be great: I love'em on my Precision, and figured that they should work great on the JC for approximating an upright sound. On the other hand, for rock I wanted something with a little more zing, and worried that the JC might be too boomy or thumpy with flats, so a good set of nickel rounds (my usual choice for my Carvin) would be best. Then I got to thinking that maybe a compromise would be the solution: some kind of half-rounds, groundwounds, semi-flats, etc. I've got a set of SIT Silencers on my Reverend and they seem perfect for that. What to do?
Finally, I decided that maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to listen to Jack himself. So I slapped on a set of Blue Steels. Seemed to me like an odd choice for a semi-hollow, but what the hell? The guy knows a little about bass; maybe he's onto something. I'm here to say that I have not been disappointed: They really make this bass sing! Someday I'll probably experiment with other strings, but I couldn't be happier than I am with the Blue Steels.
I hasten to add that I am NOT suggesting that just because Jack (or anyone else) uses a particular string that everybody else should: Everyone should (of course) use what works for them, given their tone and feel preferences, playing styles, type of music, and so forth. All I'm saying is that Jack's endorsement seemed to me like reasonable grounds for at least TRYING them before assuming that I knew better -- particularly when I was torn among several options anyway.
So if you are still undecided, try the Blue Steels. Just my $02 worth. |

Who else could claim to have more expertise regarding this particular bass?
Here's another way to think about it: Imagine that you're looking for advice on what strings to put on a JC, and you post to TB and get a dozen replies. Eleven of these, all with different suggestions, come from schmucks like me; one is posted by Jack himself. Whose advice are you gonna take? (I wish I'd thought of it this way before I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to come up with a better choice on my own!) |

I have been using DR HiBeams on my Gibson TBird, and although I like the strings, I am not sure they would be right for the Casady. I do wnatg a rock n roll sound, so would like to stick with rounds.
Maybe I will give the blue steel's a go. How are they for longevity ??? |

I'm one of those who think the JC looks better without the pickguard. I would definitely remove it from that beautiful sunburst JC so you can see more of it!
