strings to fit Hofner 182 (not violin)

i've now spent £40 on strings i can't use, or have broken trying to fit.

first, what length should i be buying? it's a 30" scale, but with the tailpiece i figure i should be buying medium strings at least, since there's another couple of inches between te end of the scale length and the end of the string... and with 4 inline tuning pegs, i figured the G would need the extra length.

and what E string will fit through the tuner?!

i bought some rotosound jazz flats (40-100) and the E wouldn't fit through the tuner... since no one sells individual flatwound strings online... £20 gone.

so i thought i'd try some thinner la bella deep talking flats (39-96)

the E still didn't fit through the tuner, so i thought i'd switch the E and A tuners, so i would need to put less string through the tuner... started bringing the tension up on the E string, and the core snapped. thought i'd put the other strings on anyway, put the A on to the E tuner, and the A's core snapped.

I've only ever dealt with the standard Jazz bass tuners. what am i missing here?

is there a labella deep talking flat set that will fit my bass? extra light short scale? will they be too short?

i just want to play my new (to me) bass.....

Here is a place to get some Hofner advice. These guys really know their Hoffys.

Be patient-sometimes the site is down.

http://www.hofners.co.uk/

You could also contact Hofner themselves and see what they recommend.

You want short scale strings for a 30" scale.

Labella makes flatwound strings specificially for Hofner basses.
Thomastik makes Jazz Flats that fit Hofners (set JF324)
Pyramid of course makes strings for Hofners but they are expensive and not that good.

Check with the people on the Hofner site first to see what the problem is with the nut.

i tried that site earlier and just got a bunch of errors, so i figured it's an old site. i'll try it again...

would the labella deep talkin extra light flatwound short scale be the ones that should fit, then?

maybe i'll order some of them to see if they fit.

in the end, i got the rotosounds to go on, but the E string has about 5 or 6 wraps around it... not good.

thanks for the tips.

Actually that is their new site, and they are having intermittent problems as they get up and running.

I would talk to them before ordering any more strings.

Wow you're right. What a shame. That place knew Hoffy's inside and out.

Try this forum.

Hofner makes strings. You could try them maybe.

Not sure which of their models they fit though. Good luck!

Hofner forum

Milo,

Wanted to let you know that the Hofner forum is back up. They decided to switch to a different format to try and avoid hackers.

So you can ask the questions about strings there if you still want to.
