Strings for a Foundation 5

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All
I have resurrected a USA Peavey Foundation 5 from the dead. It has turned out to be a wonderful player and I really like the tone of the bass and Super Ferrites. I need to do a string change and not sure where to turn. I have no idea of what is actually on it. I play roundwound GHS Boomers on my Ibanez 4 and like them I guess (haven't played terribly long).

I was wondering if a set of flats would accentuate the tone of my Peavey. I play contemporary Christian, am a metal head at heart, play 95% finger style, and love the old punchy tone of this bass. I play through an Ashdown 300T 2x10 combo with a 1x15 attached. I strive for that Opeth tone and am pretty damn close. Not one for sticky strings. Will flats hurt my punch or can I just crank the highs a little to compensate? Recommendations? The only local flats for a 5 are Rotosounds and I don't like the reviews of them. Thanks so much.

Let me add the what I am really looking for is a smooth feel without sacrifice of tone. Thanks.

Flats typically make the bass sound warmer. If you are looking for a punchy sound you might want to try stainless steel strings. (ProSteels or roto-sound roundwound come to mind) However, tone is highly subjective so you should probably try several different strings.
