Strings for fretless ABG?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've liked Ken Smith Compression Wounds for my basses, fretted and fretless.
I'm about to get a 5 string fretless ABG (Michael Kelly Dragonfly). It currently has flatwounds on it.

Does an ABG need special "acoustic" strings?
Will the Ken Smith Compressors work? (more importantly, will they work *well*?)

Other recommendations? Appreciated!

D'Addario Phosphor Bronze all the way. Regular electric bass strings sound wierd on an acoustic.

Thanks for the reply.
Are there bronze compression wounds? I'd like to go easier on the fretboard than straight roundwounds...

No, you don't need special strings. I would advise against really tight strings like D'addario Chromes, because they may bend the ABG's neck. Get the strings you like on your other basses, they should do just fine. Congrats on your Mike Kelley, I've got a Firefly and love it.

TI Jazz Flats or LaBella tapewounds are sweet on ABG.
