Strings for G&L L2000

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search but didn't see what I was looking for.

I'd like to know what kind of strings L2000 players out there are using and why. Just wanted to get some opinions first, as strings are a bit pricy.

I have a new L2000 with a maple neck and play blues-rock, rock, and a bit of funk. I've always been impressed with GHS Boomers, but that was on my old Jazz with a rosewood neck.

DA XL-170s are great on G&Ls. I have a L-2000 and a Climax that do well with them. They are a bit bright at first, but mellow into a great tone with the L-2000. Parallel / Active seems to be a great match for the XLs. TI Flats also do well.

Thanks, I'll give them a try. One of the things i should have mentioned is that i feel the L2000 is too bright with the strings it came with, which I think are SITs.

I'm very curious to try flats -- I haven't used any for many years, and that was only briefly.

My search here showed TI Powerbass seems to be a popular G&L choice.

I've also heard flats sound great - I was looking for a five string set (D'Addario Chromes) for my Tribute L2500, but couldn't find them. I use those on my jazz and love them - I've heard they sound fantastic on the L-2500, which I can totally see.

A lot of G&L fans do not care for the SIT strings that come stock saying they are too bright.

SIT nickel rounds are stock on the G&L's, and were on Reverends. Yep, they're a little birght at first, but give them a while, they mellow out...
I like the DA nickleround XL170's pretty well too.
If you really wnat to tame it, LaBella 760FL's are a great flatwound the still have some clean high end response to them.

Maybe it's just the 5 string but the D'Addarios XL 170-5 won't fit my L1505. at least not strung through body. I had some left over from my last 34 scale bass and tried them. The SIT's that came with it aren't bad IMO.

Try some Ken Smith RockMaster Mediums (45-105). They start out with a 'dark brightness', if that makes sense, and mellow out into just a killer, punchy tone!

Thanks for the responses. I had a pack of D'Addario XL-165s (I think thats the number) the dealer threw in with my bass order. I had forgotten about them, but just put them on. Sounds pretty good at low volume -- can't wait to crank it up a bit.

I'll definitely look into TIs and the Ken Smith's too.
