Strings for G Standard Tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
Curently I have my Thumb 5 strung up with Dunlop Nickels, 40-120. Im in C standard tuning (C,F,A#,D#,G#)

I plan on trying out G Standard tuning soon (G,C,F,A#,D#). I like these Dunlop strings and all, but i dont think I can get a 135 low string for it, which is what im shooting for.... Id like a set of 50-135, or something like that.

What brands should I be looking at for that General sound with such a large gauge?

Thanks Jim

My experience is that even a D'Addario .145 is too thin for G, even on 35", the tension is too low and the tone suffers.

The best strings for very low tunings are Circle K Strings. The tension balanced 5 string sets for 34" are here: standard-balanced-5-strings. The equivalent tension set to your C standard 120 100 80 60 40 would be the .174 set:

5 String Set - Balanced Standard 174
.174 .130 .096 .072 .052

They are nickelplated roundwounds.

I know the gauges look big but looking at the tension charts the set will have each string at equal tension to your current .100 F.

The tapered section is short (1.625") and may or may not reach your saddles, see this thread about Circle Ks and Warwicks: Circle K strings with Warwick Bridge

Im not worried about losing some tension.... the strings are even a little tight the way they sit.

Circle K's are a little expensive for me too..... i like new strings every month or so

Looking at the reviews, Circle Ks seem to have a long lifespan.

octave4plus.com and Conklin Guitars Snakeskins Extended-Range Bass Strings also sell big strings.

If you don't mind a floppy G I recommend a D'Addario XL nickel .145 as a cheaper option.
A set with the highest 4 strings tension balanced would be 145 125 95 70 50.
