Strings for Geddy J-Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I know Geddy use's Rotosound 66's which i've tried and sorta like. I want some strings with a bit smoother tone though while still having some punch and low end growl. So something with a balance between the geddy tone and something a bit more smoother for church playing and what not. any suggestions would be great, Thanks!

I have had a Geddy Lee bass for a while, and found that it sounded great with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys after Fender stopped making their own 7250's with the black silk. The slinky's have even mids and lows with a little more treble snap, great punch and growl. They are a bit smoother sounding than the Rotos IME on that bass. If you want a string that is dead even in lows and highs, try D'addario XL's. I'd recommend lighter guages for that bass. Some might say that DR High Beams are where you should be, I would disagree. They are too bright and too boomy for a smooth church sound. You want something with more depth of mids, less lows and less highs for a rounder sound. The 66's are more like DR high beams with more tension and much more mids, so if you want to retain the high end brilliance but loose some mids and growl, Hi Beams.

I still think the Slinkys will work for the tone you want. They are usually cheaper than DR's.

Dunlop Nickel Mediums sound warm and bright. I used to like D'Addario, but I don't care for them anymore. They just don't have the warmth of the Dunlop strings. Slinkies die too quickly for me, but if you like that they sound good.

I would recommend a set of Chromes. They are bright for flats but smoother than roundwounds. Plenty of growl.

I have a Fender MIA Jazz with a maple fretboard and also judge my strings on whether or not I can get that Geddy'sh tone. I also play in a worship setting.

IMHO if you go into nickel territory you will lose some of it. However, I really like the DR Sunbeams. Lots of warmth and growl.

Stainless is better for that edgy bite. Lately I've been using Dunlop stainless which have turned out to have nice grind while being very warm and not overly bright. Kinda out of character for a SS string. I did not like Dunlop Nickles. I found them too dark and too warm. I had to run my treble knob very high to get anything acceptable and the just didn't sound right.

Regardless of sound, DR Black Beauties look great on a Geddy.

I have a set of Chromes in the .045-.100 gauge on my Geddy and really like them. Play it in a blues band and they sound really smooth and deep but you can still get a lot of treble if you need it. The chromes did away with all the rattle and clankyness I used to get with rounds.
