Strings for a geddy lee

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, this is my first thread. I have searched and did not see this question. What strings seem to work well with a Geddy Lee? I am new to the bass (about 6 months) and really like my geddy lee but it still has on the original strings and I am thinking about changing them out. I do not play in a band so I don't have a type of music as of yet but I really like blues and my teacher seems to have me playing Beatles music as of late. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

thats the thing, I just wasnt quite sure.... Ive played a lot of strings, and when I put these on, everything seemed like it was too much of an effort, and just didnt feel good either, the notes sounded dead... I dont know where to put a finger on it, but I changed strings back immediatley

Plain ol' D'Addario XL nickels do it for me on my Geddy. In fact, I enjoy them on all my basses.

I was using DR coated Red Devils on mine and they were fantastic. really good punch, good bottom end and well defined highs, plus they look cool

I use and love DR Sunbeams on my geddy-type bass (ash/maple J-bass).

As said earlier, you can't go wrong with any set from DR.

I tried GHS Strings and found them to kind of crappy in quality. I tried DR strings standard gauge but I was not crazy about them. They didn't feel right for me, but alot of people like them. I also tried flatwounds on this bass to experiement. Flatwounds will give you a very dead sound very geezer butler (black sabbath), in the end I took them off and stuck to rotosound roundwounds. If you decide to throw on flatwounds, be aware that it puts alot of tension on the neck and you may need to adjust the nut.

On my Geddy I use: ROTOSOUND nickel on steel. (Standard Gauge) Thus far these are the best quality + sound that I like. Rotosound makes different kinds, the type I use: RN 66LD 45-105.

The one's I use are not on this site for some strange reason but you can hear different styles that Rotosound makes:
http://www.rotosound.com/bass.html

I play mostly Hard Rock, Metal, Hardcore, but also like to mess around with Funk, Jazz etc.

Good luck.

+1 on the hi beams. it is the only string i use now. I love rotos on my geddy, but the bright tone doesn't seem to last very long, imho.

+1 on the Rotosounds (the choice of Mr Lee himself too). The nickels Risen Ashes mentions are kinder to the frets, but still have plenty of life in them. I use the slightly lighter 40-100 hybrid gauge.

I'm using Ernie Ball Slinkies which sound great and cut through very well while maintaining a nice vintage tone. They don't sound as thin as the original Fenders.

Now that everybody's given him different suggestions,no doubt confusing him greatly,I think he needs to ask himself a couple of questions. Is there a particular sound he's going after? The problem is there is so much stuff out there that will work, that there is no definite answer. I own a 1973 jazz bass which is what the geddy lee was modled after. I've had it strung with Hi Beams,La Bella flats,Rotosounds,etc.. They all did fine. It currently wears a set of D'Addarrio EXPs,and so far,so good.It all boils down to personal choice. I'd suggest talking with the instructor about recomending a new set.
