strings for Geddy Lee Jazz bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a used Geddy Lee bass and want to put new strings on it. I bought the bass for the neck more so than the sound, but am hoping to get a warmer tone with new strings.

Any suggestions? The guy who set it up suggested the Ernie Ball orange pack. I trust his judgement but would also like some more opinions.

Well, I am still searching for the best strings for my GL Jazz. I have tried:

Rotosound 66's
Ernie Ball coated
GHS Brite Flats
DR HI-Beams
DR Coated
DR Lo-Riders
Others that I can't think of right now

So far, I have been happiest with the DR coated. The Rotosounds and the DR Hi-Beams just have too much zing. I did not like the Brite Flats at all, to me they killed the whole point of the Jazz. Lo-Riders, they are on there now and they are just ok. Next I will be trying Circle K's that I use on my Pedullas. I use 95's on the Pedullas and they are just too light for a Jazz so I am going to get a heavier set, they have a 112 set that looks good. If you get the Circle K's balanced tension, to me they really need a setup specific to them since the lighter strings are lower tension than normal.

My experience w/EB strings, they die WAY too fast! For a warmer sound, try an all-nickel string. The Fender 7150 set is classic, and will provide plenty of warmth while still retaining the roundwound sound.

Flats, IMO, do not belong on a Jazz. Put 'em on a P and I am good to go, but not on a J...
