strings to get upright-like sound

Sign in to disble this ad
hello,
what kind of strings do you suggest to get a upright-acoustic-jazz sound from a Squier Jazz freetless?
I know it's OT, but I want to change the current factory pick-up of my Squier Jazz freetless (year 1995). opinions? I play mostly jazz and bossa nova.

Generally, any set of flats would get you an "uprighty" kind of sound. No idea about the actual string set, as I've never tried flats before.

TI flats sound good to me, here again it's one of those things we don't get a chance to "comparison" shop, but I use them & like them.

As Ken Smith would say, nothing sounds like an upright but an upright...that said, you can get "closer" to an upright sound with a set of tapewounds IMO...

I like LaBella, but there are others

Is there any difference between tapewounds and flatwounds?

You will get the most "upright-esque" sound (though still not even close to a real upright) with the tapewound strings and, rather than replace your magnetic pickups, add a piezo bridge. Check out the Rob Allens for an idea of what this would sound like.

A lot, to my ears. Most tapes are brighter than flats, but the different attack and lesser sustain is what gives them an uprightish quality when EQed and played for that sound, IMO.

move your hand, too

Once you've got your new strings, you'll want to experiment with varying your right-hand position. Instead of anchoring your thumb on a pickup, anchor it on the end of the fingerboard. You'll get a very different sound.
