Strings for good Shortscale Intonation

Sign in to disble this ad
I've learned that not all strings are created equal for intonation. Using a tuner on my shortscale, Daddario .100 Chromes are all over the place. Fender flats .095 are better, but the best for holding the tone and being closest on the 5th fret are the cheap roundwounds that came with the bass originally. I like flats, but I'm thinking that a heavier gauge round wound would be best. Yes? How about those fat Labella deep talkin tapewounds?

Your bass simply may need intonating at the bridge. I have two short scales and after I install a new set of strings I always intonate the bass at the bridge. It shouldn't make that much difference in string types. There mare articles that can help you do this on this website and others. Just use the search engine.
I have never used the LaBella tapes on a short scale, but they did sound good on my long scales One guy I know used them on his shortscale and loved them.
Albuquerque is a great town. I have been their a few times and always enjoyed the stay.

With the Daddarrio E I've had to move the saddle all the way back to get close on the 12th. the needle on the tuner swings all over. 5th fret tends to be sharp on all strings with the Chromes as well. I can get the cheap roundwounds spot on. Thanks for noting Abq. too.
