Yes, this has been a common misconception for quite some time now. I remember having to have students un-learn this and it would often haunt them years later. I wasn't sure if you were asking about action at first or what. I use the pitch method (choice #1). Even though the notes are getting higher as you go towards the ground, it's the musical result that I care about and reference.

As for this quest for the true single definition of words like higher and first, it's all relative. It's a bit arbitrary to say one use is always correct in all contexts.

If you chain a dog to a tree where's the first link? If you read tab which is the top string?

Well, the last choice was intended as the carrots. I've seen bass lessons about plucking hand technique, that commonly say "don't pull up on the string. Instead, drag the finger across the string so it comes to rest on the next-higher string."

This is a question about proper bass terminology. It is NOT a question about strings, or particular basses, or technique.

Imagine someone wishing to ask what a "brighter" sound might be. What forum should that question go in? Where DO terminology questions go?
