strings for a jazz

does anyone have any suggestions for strings for a jazz bass, that give a smooth, growly sound

I use Thomastik Infeld Superalloys on all my basses (Fender Jazzes and Precisions) and am pleased with the sound out of them. YMMV.

+1 ... Fender roundcores (8250's I think) are quite growly too once broken in, excellent for slap.

Depends on your Jazz bass and what type sound you're looking for. You hardly see a vintage Jazz without D'Addario XL170's! My choice for the past 20 years.

If you're a slapper and like a string that is very bright and produces no mids, go with DR's.

If you like a string a produces a full sound go with D'addario XL170's if you want nickel, GHS Bass Boomers if you want steel. These 2 I have found to be the best for overall tone and feel.
