What would you recommend for those that own this bass? His own brand or some Dr's?

Well I've heard Ken Smith strings sound the best of KS basses.

I've had great success with the following:

Nickel:
Ken Smith Taper Core Burners
DiAddario XL's

Steel:
Dean Markley SR-2000 (The best steel string on planet IMHO. -"Now watch them get discontinued" )

All in Light to Medium Light Gauges.

For what it's worth, my current main bass the Smith BT6G is at it's best with the Smith Taper Core Burners.

I've tried a few others, but I keep going back to Ken Smith Taper Core Steel. Haven't tried the Taper Core Burners yet. I love the Ken Smith Compressors on my fretless (not a Smith), haven't tried them on the BSR5 yet.

I emailed Mr Smith he of course said the ones that originally were strung on the bass is only what I should use for my style of playing.

My advice would be to invest in a few different sets and decide for yourself which ones do it for you and what you like or dislike about them.

IMHO and IME it's an expensive but necessary experiment but not nearly as expensive an experiment as it is on Double Bass.

Smith's (and most fine basses)are very sensitive to different strings so IMHO it's worth investing a C-note in 3 sets of strings. (It's not a bad thing to have back up sets.)

Enjoy!

I wanted to try a set of Dr taper's and compare them to smith taper's. So I'll do that. I love the slap tone that I had on my Cirrus from the Dr Fat Beams
