Strings for Lakland 55-02

Just landed a used 55-02D and need to replace the strings. I think the bass had DR High Beams by the look of the circles at the end of the strings at the bridge.

I'm leaning towards the following:
Rotosound Swingbass 66
DR High Beams
DR Low Beams (nickel)
DR Long Necks
GHS Bass Boomers

The sound I'm looking for is smooth, punchy, and growly if there is such a thing.

I know the DR Long Necks have the tapered ends but what are they? Basically High Beams? Will regular long Low Beams allow me to string through the body?

Any feedback appreciated.

If you have the Barts, you will want to get Steel strings. They brighten up the tone quite a bit, but still keep it punchy and fat.

If you have the Lakland pickups, you may want to go with Nickel coated strings to keep it from sounding thin. Of course you can always boost the bass too.

I'll toss a vote in for a set Circle K Balanced Tension in your gauge of choice; I went with .136's.

I've got a Stambaugh 35" neck through fiver with a Bart X5 in the neck, 2 X5's in the bridge with an OBP-3 pre that I just replaced the very very old DR Hi-Beams with a new set of Circle K's and I've been happy with them so far. If you go this route, be prepared for time to setup your bass since your action and intonation will most likely change.

I've been a a DR supporter for 15 years, but Skip's strings interested me enough to give them a shot. So far, I'm happy.

Enjoy your choice and post back!

Matt
