Strings for a lakland 5501 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys, i've a got a problem. My bass 5501 needs extra long strings, but not even Daddario long neck strings can work for my bass. Here's the kicker, I need flatwounds for my fretless beauty.

What brands out there are considered "extra long"

JO Flats

You can also order Lakland Custom Label Joe Osborn flats for 5-string basses right off the Lakland website. Never tried them myself, but I hear nothing but good reviews... and you know they'll fit the bass! Finding extra long scale strings for a 5'er is definitely a trick... people look at me like I have three heads around here if I go into a music store asking for them. <shrug>

The Lakland strings are made GHS. Check their site for details.

Lakland specifically says DO NOT string the JO flats through the body because of stress at the bridge. TI Jazz flats extra long will fit through the body, no problem.

Try some Sadowsky flats. They have some for long scale basses. You can always string it at the bridge on a Lakland too. They go both ways on those bridges.

I have D'addario Chromes flatwounds strung through the body in mine. They are the super long five string set. It's taken them about 2 weeks to adjust and I had to do a lot of tweaking with the setup but it's been worth it as the sound is phenominal.

I ordered them from Bass Guitar Strings dot U.S.

I just bought a set of Long Scale D'Adarrio Chromes for my Lakland 55-01 andthey are too short - even through the top load bridge option. The B string won't even fit through the bridge (top load) I'm not pleased that the salesman at the famed "Rudy's Music: in NYC recommended these for my 55-10. I will definitely be seeking a refund.

Hey, that sucks about the purchase.

It appears you have the 'long' set. You need the 'super long' set.

In my experience, many salesmen don't know what strings fit what bass and are reluctant to admit it. Better to check the forums her and on RickResource. The users are fast, friendly and knowledgeable.

I've been using the D'Addario Super Long EXL170-5SL and they work great for thru-body.

I just bought D'Addario Long Nickels for my 55-01. Then I found this thread!

So what ya'll are saying is I need extra long??

Guess I'll return them and see if they have any extra long or does that only apply to Flats?

I bought a used 55-02 a while back. I'm just now getting to where the strings could stand to be changed and wanted as close to what I have as possible. These are roundwounds, but I can't see any way to identify them except for the silk wrap. And I don't know strings by their wraps.

Are the ones with the kind of gold wraps the factory strings? If they aren't what ARE the ones with the gold wraps?

Has anyone here on TB used the Joe Osborn flats? I haven't been able to locate a review or comparison to TIs, Chromes etc. I'm curious about the tension. I really dig the tension of my light set (40-100) of Lakland steel rounds and am wondering how the Joe Osborn light set would compare.

I have Chromes 81s on my KYDD, but that bass is 30"short scale so I'm not sure if that is an apt comparison. Also, to me the tension feels higher than any of my roundwound sets- esp. the Laklands. I've used Fender flats and found them to have more tension than I'd like.

If the Laklands are the same strings as the GHS Precision Flats, just rebranded, then I would also be interested in how a light gauge set of those would compare on the TI (least tension) Chromes, more tension, Rotosounds, most tension- scale. For that matter, does GHS make a light set?

( I apologize if I've somehow missed the thread that answers this question, -I've read and posted to a few of the other tension/ flatwound comparision threads to no avail. If one exists, please feel free to redirect me)

At this point, I cannot afford to conduct a proper flatwound shootout.

thanks-Spc

Anything by D'addario and you will need to buy the SUPERlong set.
Not long or extralong.
If it doesn't say superlong on the package, you got the wrong ones for your 35 scale string through body bass..
