Strings like rotosound 66?

Sign in to disble this ad
I love the sound and tension of the 66 and dont mind the fact that they are harsher on the fingers than other rounds, infact I find that to be exaggeration. So far, no other strings ive played gives me that midrange punch that the 66 offer.

However, I do notice that it kinda wears my fret. Not sayin that my frets are hanging by the thread from an hour of playing, but after half a year of rotosound I can actually see some fret wear on my frets compared to when i used dr hi beams. One thing, Im a hard digger and use vibratos and bends frequently.

i used to use roto 66's for years, and occassionally still do, but now. most of the time for my basses with stainless steel rounds, i use daddario prosteels.

IME, nickel plated rounds will yield less fret wear but they'll also be a little duller sounding, so if you want bright with lots of harmonics/overtones, it stay with stainless steel.

I loved the tone of the 66's, but I was also concerned about fret wear.

I know you used the Hi-Beams, but I highly recommend trying the Lo-Beams. They have a bit more resistance because they are hex-core(like the 66's), and are very aggressive, with a great midrange response.

Don't be fooled by their name. They aren't "dull sounding" by any means

Just get the Roto swing bass 66 nickel!

Been using them forever on all my basses that wear rounds and have not noticed any fret wear!

fight fire with fire

If you like the sound, you might consider letting them wear the useful life out of your frets, then when it's time for a fret job, put in some high quality stainless steel frets.

The way to get that aggressive stainless-steel roundwound tone is with stainless steel roundwound strings. You might like one brand better than another, but as a class, they will all eat nickel frets for breakfast.

Nothing sounds like the steel Rotos. Worn frets are the cost of doing business.

Lots of bright rounds out there, but none have the "grrr" Rotos have. Plus, frets have a lot of life in them even after you start to see wear.

been using Rotos since 1977 and never found a string that sounded like them. You can try other strings to hear what they sound like. I really like the mids of Blue Steels and Lo-Riders

The only string Ive tried and liked as well as rotosound swing66 is the new DR neons. Otherwise I still rate rotosound swing66 as the best string. The neins have a little bit more low bass articulation and are slightly brighter. Just enough so to have me dial down the active treble a little bit till their broken in soundwise.

Fret wear schmet wear. I have them on my 74' 4001 and I plan on keeping them on there. Fret jobs aren't the end of the world.

I was using the DR Low Riders in lieu of Rotos for playing Rush. Just recently I tried a set of Dunlops with the differing core which makes them more flexible than the stiffer Low Riders. While the tone is bit more "woody" I find I'm able to dig in more, which you say is your playing style. The jury is still out; I also have a set of Hi Beams I want to try out.
