Strings with little to zero tapered ends?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Lakland JO5 and lately I have been having a problem finding strings with little to zero tapered ends so I can use the strings thru bridge option. Not that they sound bad stringing traditional but in my quest to find my 'favorite' string, most of the one's I've bought all have tapered ends and if I try to string thru the body, the tapered end won't reach past the nut so I'm forced to string traditional.

DR Long Necks have very long tapers, if you want to use tapered strings.

Are you talking about the taper on the nut-end? If so, I haven't had any problems with the regular DR strings of various flavors. I've strung them through the body of several instruments, a DJ5 and a 55-01 included.

@mmbongo.........no, I actually don't want tapered nut end strings. I don't mind tapered ball end.

@PSPookie.......I will try those. But, I did try Long Necks previously and the nut end was tapered too long and was sitting in the nut saddle. I had to string traditional to get the tapered end past the nut.

The string must taper between the nut and tuner because if you wind the full gauge onto the tuner it will break.

You just need longer strings, ones made for 36 inch basses. Since you are stringing through the body you also need a long distance from ball-end to bridge-end taper.

I disagree. The strings are quite long enough. The nut end taper was just too long. Maybe by an inch or 2. I had plenty of tapered end to wrap around the tuners. Whatever Lakland strings ship with the basses seem to work perfectly. I haven't found anything else that fits right.

D'Addario make 'Super Long' strings which are 38 inches from ball-end to nut-end taper. Your bass has a 35 inch scale so that gives you up to 3 inches to run through the body. HOWEVER I have just measured the distance from edge of ball-end to start of bridge-end taper: 49mm. This may not be long enough.

What I mean is... A longer winding length, the distance from ball-end to nut taper. Look for a 38 inch winding.
