Unhappy Strings (long enough) for Lakland 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
Help! I bought a set of "long scale" strings for my Lakland 55-02 bass. The B string is not long enough! The tapered end comes out in the middle of the first fret! Any ideas?
Thanks.

Oh man, this is so freakin' irritating. I forget about this everytime I buy strings. You can try stringing through the brigde, which helps some, and you can try setting up a little higher/living with a little buzz, but the real answer is you have to buy "super-extra-long-scale" strings. I know D'addario makes some, because that's what I'm using. I think thery're actually called "Extra-long".

Bummer! I have extra long DR LoRiders strung through body on my 5501. They're just right.

At the same time I had ordered Lakland strings as back up in case the DR's were short.

I haven't put them on yet, but am anxious to feel\hear the difference as the B string is lighter (128 vs 130).

I used Sadowsky XL stainless steel rounds for my Lakland when I had it. They fit perfectly and sounded awesome. Give them a try, I think you'll be impressed.

DR Strings and Lakland strings (duh...) fit them just fine. Elixers don't fit on my 34" 4-string Laklands STB, nor do D'Addario's regular long-scale strings.

Extra Long only

I'm experimenting with strings on my 55-01 right now and what I've found is that you have to look for the "extra long" designation regardless of brand or they don't fit.

The ones I know come in extra long are D'Addario, LaBella, Sadowsky, DR, and Thomastik-Infeld, and of course Lakland.

Haven't looked at other brands...

If you are looking for flats they have to be strung through the bridge only, not through the body.

You need EXTRA LONG unfortunately. It's really annoying but hey.. lol
DR and Dean Markley strings always fit extra long, fwiw. D'Addarios you always have to specify extra long which sucks, because they are rarely available in stores. DRs and DMs always fit EL.

SIT makes an excellent set of extra long stainless strings that I use on both my JO5 and 55-94 strung thru the body. I get the Rock Brights. Very ballsy strings that last a long time.

Regular Dr's are susposed to fit basses up to 37 scale. They worked fine on my 55-02 when I had it. And they work fine on my 35 scale Roscoe and KSD

String it through the bridge and most XL sets will fit just fine.

Sadowsky has been the best string for me on my DJ and 5502.

This will do the trick...

DR High-Beam Extra Long Scale

They also have a solo B Hi-Beam string that you can order in extra long scale-

I don't want to open a can of worms here, but these are NOT the taper core DR 'Long Necks' which are nice and long, but did NOT work for me on this bass - I ran into intonation problems on the B string.
