I've had SIT's before, and they died in 20 minutes. No joke. I simply can not bring myself to buy another set.
+1 on Elixirs. I have a set right now, and the coating is coming off over the frets and where I pick, but they still sound really good. |

Flats especially will last years (I've heard 5-10 for TI's).

For rock/metal, dr lowriders, fender stainless steel or warwick black labels. Each lasts long and sounds decent.

Yup, the plastic coating comes off after a while .... except for playing with a pick; then .... ZOOM... it's gone.
As for the fretting hand; the plastic coating actually lasts quite a while.
... they sound pretty nice too.
