Which strings for me?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have recently been popping strings, first the G and then the A, on my Traben Phoenix 5 String. I am going to get a new set of strings for this baby, and I wanted to know what you guys recommend. I play mostly fingerstyle, but recently I have been slapping and popping just as much as I have been playing fingerstyle. I occasionally tap as well. I want strings that are good for the styles described above. I play a lof of different kinds of music, ranging from metal and rock to funk to a bit of jazz, but mostly rock. Oh, also if it makes any difference, my bass has string thru body.

I really like the Nickle Plated DR Lo-Riders on my Warwick. Good feel, and a long lasting "new string" sound.

I use stainless DR's, Lo Riders on my 5 and Hi Beams on my 4's.

What sonic differences are there between the nickel and stainless DRs?

I've been playing stainless for a long time now so I'm used to them but from what I understand they are brighter, last longer, but are rougher on you fingers and frets.

I think the Nickle Plated strings sound a little more mellow than stainless.

What gague should I be looking at? I want a nice and thick tone, but I also do not want the low B to be loose.

for Low-Riders...
SS has a dark agressive growl and has a more metallic and pingy attack.

Nickel is smoother sounding and easier on the ears. I prefer these and the high beams to SS low riders normally but i have found that SS's record more cleanly as they have more compressed and focused sound.
