Strings for MM Stingray

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using Dean Markley Blue Steels, lights, forever on my stringray. I've been starting to wonder if Nickel or another brand, slightly larger, might help take the edge off the known clacking of the stringray. I know the major causes of the clackling - finger attack, maple neck, low action, etc, etc - but wanted to get an opinion on strings regarding this.

I only use EB Hybrid Slinkys for my Stingray, I once read that the Slinkys were the best match for the Stingrays, and boy is that true, I used to only play Rotosound Swing Steel thingys until I tried a set of the Ernie Balls, there expensive but well worth it. Keep it EB !

Yes, nickel strings will help. I use D'Addario EXL's (nickel) on my SR4... much less clanky than steel strings and still even too clanky for some of my projects. Try taking the treble down just a hair on your bass too.

Right, I have my treble active very low, that does help. Trying Nickel sounds like an option and maybe EB.

I have a single pickup, 3 EQ knob.

Man, I've had the same issue with my SR5 for a long time. I love the playability, sound and potential of the SR5 but all in all it can be a little over the top. Tonight I've fallen back in love with the SR5 and it's all because I just installed a set of Sadowsky Blue Label Nickels. I've tried a lot of different strings on this bass including Sadowsky Black Label and Sadowsky Flats (which are great too) but the Blue labels are the string for the SR5 from now on. Give them a try, I'm pretty sure you will like them.

SR and Slinkys

My SR5 always has a set of slinkys, and i love the sound. But shows up my sometimes sloppy technique with the clacking. Never tried flats, but thinking of it. Or i could work on my technique..... They also dont keep that new ring as long as other strings ive used,

I put Blue Steel mediums on my SR5 and thought they sounded pretty good but after going back to the Regular Slinky 5 string set, I have no desire to try any other strings on this bass. The bass just works with these strings. The low B was way tighter and alive sounding then the Blue Steel B and the balance from string to string is perfect.

In Canada the EB strings are about the least expensive you can find. I think they are the best choice for an EB bass. I love the Super Slinky set on my SR4 but may have to give the Hybrid Slinky set a shot.

Try Dean Markley NPS Roundcore bass (ML-4). Less clangy than the Blue Steels. The gauges are G-45, D-65, A-85, E-105. The heavier A and E are NICE! I have an original '78 MM StingRay. It's a monster!!

DR Lo-Rider nickels, medium gauge (.45-.105) are what's on my Ray. I've tried quite a few different strings, and these have made me happiest on this particular bass.

+1 of Sadowsky Blue Nickels
on my second set for my SR5 HH

I use Super Slinky's on my SR4 and Regular slinky 5's on my G&L L2500. These sound the best (to me) for these basses.
I like the sound of an 80 A and 100 E. 85's and 105's sound to thick.

I've never liked stainless strings on a Stingray. I think Rays sound best with nickels in at least 50, 70, 85, 105 with medium action. I like Daddario XLs.

agree. there would be a law saying: stingrays using stainlees should be punished with jail.

I have been using GHS Boomers lately on my EBMM basses, and I think they are a great match.

Really smooth out the sound, and have some added bass response to what are pretty "bright" sounding instruments. If that's what you're looking for.
