Strings for my Spector Euro 5

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a gig next friday and the Spector needs a restring, because the strings are unbelievably dead (The bass had been in the shop for a long time when I bought it)

Rotosounds Swing bass - I've got the Billy Sheehan set on my Jazz, I like them. But I think they might be a bit too bright with the Spector (which is maple as opposed to alder)
Elites - People have recommended them, never tried myself
GHS Boomers - As above, but I've heard they are very bright, and the Spector sounds bright enough as it is
Elixirs - Way too expensive (about £40 total for 5 strings)
Warwick EMPs or Black labels - The world might end if I mix spector with warwick, but the EMPs are pretty cheap for coated strings.

Anyone got any other suggestions or recommendations?

I heard Spectors need a taperwound B for it to fit in the bridge properly, can anyone confirm this? and if so, which sets would work and which would not.

Cheers,

Joe

I use Ernie Ball Slinky's. The green 5 string set. They don't have the taper core but still sound great on the B string. Plus they are real cheap around $25.00 a set here in the U.S. They are bright but you can compensate by turning down your treble. I believe the gauges are 45, 65, 80, 105, 130. Hope this helps.

I had Spector strings and yes they are a very tight fit.
I used Sadowski's black label w/tapered B(not bad) maybe blue label would work better for me.
I just(2 days ago) re-strung mine with Ken Smith Burners(nickel) and i'm so happy with the sound and they come with the tapered B.This might be the ones i might be using from now on.

IMO, stainless strings don't give you the Spector sound. Nickels are the way to go. It's like a night and day difference.

I agree... I used DR Sunbeams on my recently traded Rebop 5 and IMO it was the perfect fit! Still use them on my '86 NS-2.

Because of the narrow opening, the short answer to that is "yes" but there are a few conventionally wound B strings that will work. The Rotosound 5 string set is one of those. That B string will fit a Spector bridge.
