Strings with no metal wounding at the end. (?)

What do you call those strings without the metal wounding near the end of the string? Is it a specific brand or did people just cut them off? Thanks.

More than one brand does that. I know DR does, but I seem to remember a couple of other that did, too.

'Exposed core' ... just the string core runs over the saddle. They're made that way by many several different companies.
